Wheeler: what does machismo mean?
Me: the root word is ‘macho’. it means being overly manly and usually a jerk. why?
Wheeler: cuz some chick at the bar said it to me.
Me: and so you pretended you knew what it meant and came home and asked richard
Wheeler: ya. but why would she use that word? why not just say macho?
Me: cuz she’s a hipster douche who likes to use esoteric words
Wheeler: fuck you…. what does esoteric mean?
Esoteric is itself esoteric, making it an even douchier hipster word to use unless the context makes it necessary. It means not common knowledge – something that few people know.
The awkward pause after the “eff yu” reminded me of this a quote I made up and was gonna wait till I had an opp to say it in response to something relevant, but since I’ve never successfully pulled off a “save for later” line like that, i figured i better fire this one now while its fresh. It goes:
“That comedian brings the dryhumor lulz like i bring the awkward conversation lulls” — aaah?? nice, right??
UPDATE: MissAshleyPants illustrates the following advice/hypothetical thusly:
Actually, machismo is a spanish word, that indeed comes from Macho.
It refers to the overall topic of Machos, but it is not used as an adjective, meaning I don’t think your friend understood her cause she spoke some spanish, or she IS a hipster idiot and she’s got no clue of what the hell she’s sayin.
….I’m thinking the second one.
