I finally saw The Social Network and it only confirmed my rule on the “dont do business with friends or family” policy – which is that its bullshit. I ONLY want to do business with friends and family, if possible.
If you’re a sneaky cheating person who will betray me in business then i sure as hell dont need you as a friend or in my life as a family member, and if you’re not then i only want to get rich WITH you cuz i like you and you’re a good person. duh. Its the perfect way to weed bad people from your life and reap rewards with the good people in your life.
“Don’t do business with friends or family” is only good advice to people who have shitty friends and family. and a lot of people do, obviously. but you shouldn’t not do business with them because they are your friends or family members and you don’t want to ruin the relationship with them – you should just not do business with selfish backstabby people. Sometimes you don’t KNOW a persons true nature and you find out the hard way. so what? That applies with anyone. except with a friend or family member you have the added service of cutting that person out of your inner circle after they betray you as opposed to adding a stranger to your business circle and having them go rogue on you.
I have always had the policy to involve friends in my various ventures in any way possible. Even now, as I embark on new projects, I will invite online friends whom I’ve never met to get involved in whatever way they can. not because I see some hidden talent in business economics or marketing analysis and think they could uniquely improve whatever I’m working on, but because I like them and if something takes off I want it to take off with as many people that I like as possible. vastly superior than strangers.
