Sharing Dexter. It’s what Friends do.

Friendship comes from the heart. and so does blood. so that’s why REAL friends share Dexter (the Showtime series about a serial killer who only kills serial killers) with each other.

It started this past Thanksgiving when I started with Season 1 at my brothers house only because my sister in-law didnt give us a choice and just put the first episode on through Netflix’s Wii streaming. It was key that it went down that way since I’d been hearing everyone rave about the series for the previous 5 years it’s been running and just couldn’t get myself to care enough to give it a shot. I’ve corrected that mistake… and now, like Bruce Wayne forever avenging the unjust death of his parents through a life of crime fighting, I have taken on the mantle of Dexter-suggester and have been forcefully evangelizing the shows excellence to all around me.

The first step was to get my nephew Aidan hooked when he joined the family a day or two later. He started late but soon became a regular and we ate birthday cake and had a Dexter-Buddy party marathon all night before I left. Poor fella is feeling the void having to carry on the viewing in my absence.

(Pat is his dads mom slash my dads ex-wife, and wanted to give him condoms for his 16th birthday but thinks he’s too young to watch a couple serial killers get bone-sawed with an occasional dusting of boobage? silly grandma)

What’s so great about this dopey show? Good writing, good acting, interesting scenarios and most importantly: Non-formulaic plot twists. There are some “seen-it-coming”s, but not many. I can enjoy a “by the book” written show like Desperate Housewives if it’s silly enough, even at the times when it’s not trying to be – but Dexter isn’t silly and doesn’t follow the obvious formula’s. There is no “oh, this character has hit a wall in the story – we’ll just write them out and they’ll never be seen or heard from again” going on. The developments, after you accept the surreal premise are true-to-life and balance being juicy and plausible, well.

The only side effect to it all is that it might push you over the edge on killing someone… As my friend Daniel said “this show is seriously going to turn so many people into serial killers, dont lie; wrapping people in plastic and interrogating them has been more tempting than before since watching this show.” – he’s right.
