Mmmbop by Hanson – one of the biggest hits in the 90s – makes no sense in any possible way. There is no secret meaning or reference – it’s just silly words put into a poem that doesn’t make any sense and the tune is so rockin-catch-catchy that no one cares and that’s pretty cool. But it’s not without controversy as you’re gonna find out right now, cuz I always wondered what the actual nonsense words were so I looked them up. Well, they’re wrong. Which is saying something because – again – they don’t mean anything. They’re not words, so how did they manage to screw up the transcription?
This is what I hear, this is what YOU hear, –these are the lyrics to the song:
Mmmbop
Dop. by. dooo wop
Shibby Dow dye
Dooo-wop — dop by deeew
Yea eee-yeaaa1a
This can be proven in a court of law. Those sounds-to-word scribings *are* the lyrics.
but here are what the band claims the actual lyrics are:
Mmmbop ba duba dop ba
Du bop ba duba dop ba
Du bop ba duba dop ba du
Yeah, yeah
lolwut? No. Wrong. Hardly even close, bruh.
Think there’s not much a difference? Then you didn’t sing each of them in our head and i’m disappointed in you. Go back and sing the chorus by karaoke-ing my one-true-legitimate lyric transcript and then try and fail to do theirs and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Do it with this Windows Movie Maker lyric edit first, cuz the video is too distracting. You can watch the video afterward here below if you want but for the lyric purposes, you shouldn’t be watching anything as you let yourself enter an astral plane of audio sensory majesty and allow the words to form in your head so you can compare the two transcripts.
After completing the exercise – if you so choose – you may watch the music video as well for your troubles:
