Let’s not “Turkey Day” our Independence Day

Erryone enjoy them hot dogs and burgers and exploding colors in the sky on July 4th, but enjoy them more under the proper name-age of the holiday why-dont-we?

It’s Independence Day. Not 4th of July. We’re commemorating freedom, not the calendar.

Just a friendly reminder…

99% of hate, unhappiness, loathing, and resentment comes from ingratitude. Referring to our great national day of gratitude (Thanksgiving) as “Turkey Day” is way worse, but the principals of eroding appreciation for good surroundings are present in the July 4thification of our nations celebration of Independence.

It’s not a moral crime to say the date and you’re not spitting on George Washingtons grave by using it neitherz or anything, but you’d do well to at very least pepper in the proper name as much as possible to keep the ‘murica spirit alive.

It’s not gonna stop me from using the “Happy 4th of July” sticker on Snapchat, but I made sure to tell each Home Depot person who helped me at all 3 of the Home Depots in the valley area assisting in my pursuit of sod and other gardening tools that the happy day they should have is due to Independence and not the 4th day of this month.

My doctrine is as follows… Since Independence Day’s date is significant, unlike the arbitrary calendar dates assigned to Christmas and Thanksgiving, it’s appropriate to refer to the holiday as the 4th of July but better to use “Independence Day” when wishing the greeting to your neighbors and loved ones. Doesn’t have to be exclusive, but it should be present twice as much as your utterances of saying “4th of July”. 2 to 1 ratio or more is just right. So “what are you guys doing for the 4th of July?” is cool but “Happy 4th of July” is less cool. “Happy Independance Day” is coolest.
You don’t have to be cool if you don’t want to, and i’m sure i’ll get plenty of “happy 4th of July” messages in response to this post, ironically celebrating generic conformity over independence (way to stick it to society, you scamps!) but the above doctrine of when to use the date and what to say when wishing-well to others is 2legit2quit so it’s only out of love that I ask you to be on the right side of history on this one. Try and resist your petulant urge to do the opposite of what smart people note is best to do and take one for freedom, you dirty bitches.

William Smith did not risk his life against impossibly out-gunned alien forces for you to be calling this glorious anniversary “the 4th of July”.

Can’t believe it’s been 19 years, indeed.
