Why are fingers the only ones that get “tips”? Let’s discuss

Per a question someone asked me on SnapChat:

Why are “finger tips” a thing? We don’t say “toe tips” or… well, that’s really the only comparable one even though the person who first posed this to me also included other body parts, most notably, elbows.

“Why don’t we say elbow tips” doesn’t feel as valid of a question as toe tips in relation to finger tips, so I’m gonna dismiss those for lack of standing because the tip of something is traditionally used in the context where that thing is more forward-facing. Like the tip of the spear or the tip of an iceberg. Our elbows make a point but we don’t say that they are the tips of our arms and we don’t call the crown of our heads the tips of our bodies. It’s kind of OK but not the best. The other half falls apart all together though I’m afraid.

That’s your tip for the day.
